๐Ÿ”ฎ Obsidian: From First Note to Second Brain

Build a knowledge system you actually own โ€” one plain-text note at a time. This course takes you from a blank vault to a linked, searchable, automated "second brain," with a hands-on project in every lesson.

๐Ÿงญ Obsidian in 60 Seconds

Obsidian is a free app for writing and connecting notes. But three ideas make it different from every notebook app you've tried:

  • Your notes are just files. Every note is a plain-text Markdown file in a folder on your computer. No lock-in, no cloud account required, readable in 50 years.
  • Notes link to each other. Type [[ and connect any note to any other. Over time those links turn a pile of notes into a web of knowledge you can explore.
  • It grows with you. Start as a simple notepad today; add plugins to become a task manager, database, journal, or personal wiki tomorrow. Same app, same files.

People use Obsidian for study notes, research, journaling, writing books, running projects, planning Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, and building a lifelong personal knowledge base. By the end of this course, you'll have built your own.

๐Ÿ“š About This Course

Most note apps are easy to start and impossible to grow. You add notes, they pile up, and six months later you can't find anything. Obsidian solves the "pile of notes" problem โ€” but only if someone shows you how. That's what this course is for.

We start at zero: no jargon, no assumptions, nothing installed. You'll take your first note in the first lesson. From there we build steadily โ€” Markdown, linking, the graph, real note-taking systems used by researchers and writers, then the power tools (plugins, automation, databases) that turn Obsidian into a bespoke tool shaped around your brain. We finish with a capstone where you design and assemble your own complete system.

Every lesson is project-driven: you don't just read, you build. And every lesson teaches you how to learn and think with the tool, not just which buttons to press โ€” because the buttons change, but the thinking lasts.

What You'll Learn

  • Write fluently in Markdown and format notes beautifully โ€” headings, callouts, tables, code, math
  • Link notes and use the graph to discover connections you didn't know you had
  • Choose and run a real knowledge system โ€” Zettelkasten, PARA, atomic notes, daily notes
  • Extend Obsidian with core and community plugins: Dataview, Templater, Canvas, and more
  • Automate capture, turn notes into live databases, and build dashboards
  • Sync across devices, back up safely, use Git, and publish notes to the web
  • Work confidently on mobile and design a personal knowledge system that lasts for years

Who This Course Is For

  • Complete beginners who have never opened Obsidian โ€” we assume nothing
  • Students, researchers & writers drowning in notes and sources
  • Switchers coming from Notion, Evernote, OneNote, or Apple/Google Notes who want to own their data
  • Tinkerers & professionals who want automation, dashboards, and a system that scales

๐ŸŒŸ How to Get the Most Out of This Course (and Out of Obsidian)

Obsidian rewards a particular way of working. Follow these principles and you'll get ten times the value โ€” from the course and from the app for years afterward.

๐Ÿง  Mindset

  • Start ugly, start now. Your first vault will be messy. That's correct. A system you actually use beats a perfect system you're still planning. Take the first note today.
  • Don't buy plugins-first. The most common beginner trap is spending week one installing 40 plugins and 0 notes. Master the plain-text core first; add tools only when a real need appears. This course is deliberately ordered that way.
  • Notes are for your future self. Write so the "you" of six months from now can understand it cold. That single habit is worth more than any plugin.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to work through the lessons

  • Keep Obsidian open beside the lesson. Do every step live in your own vault. Reading about linking teaches you nothing; making a link teaches you everything.
  • Build one real vault as you go. Don't use a throwaway. Use the vault you'll keep โ€” by lesson 24 it becomes your actual second brain, seeded with 24 lessons of practice.
  • Do the Learning Journal. Every lesson ends with a reflection prompt written inside Obsidian. This is not busywork โ€” journaling in the tool is the fastest way to make it stick, and it doubles as your first real note collection.
  • Follow the order once, then wander freely. The path is designed so each lesson earns the next. After a first pass, treat it as a reference and jump around.

โšก Habits that compound

  • Capture in one place. Every idea, quote, and task goes into Obsidian first.
  • Link generously. When a note reminds you of another, link them. Connections are the whole point.
  • Review a little, often. Five minutes a day beats a three-hour cleanup once a year.
  • Learn the keyboard. A handful of shortcuts (covered in Lesson 15) will make you feel like the app reads your mind.

โฑ๏ธ How much time?

About 24 hours of focused work across 24 lessons. A sustainable pace is 2โ€“3 lessons a week โ€” roughly six weeks to complete, with your knowledge system growing the whole time. In a hurry? Modules 1โ€“3 (nine lessons) make you genuinely productive on their own.

๐Ÿ“– Course Modules

Eight modules, 24 lessons, one continuous build. Each module ends with you more capable than a typical Obsidian user โ€” and Module 1 alone gets you further than most people ever go.

Module 1 ยท Getting Started

What Obsidian is, why plain-text-you-own matters, and your very first notes. Zero to comfortable.

Module 2 ยท Writing in Obsidian

Markdown from scratch, then rich formatting and metadata that make notes powerful and findable.

Module 3 ยท The Superpower: Linking

The feature that changes everything: connect notes, read the graph, and give your vault structure.

Module 4 ยท Building a Knowledge System

Proven methods and daily workflows that make notes compound instead of pile up.

Module 5 ยท Making It Yours

Core plugins, themes and CSS, plus the keyboard skills that make Obsidian feel effortless.

Module 6 ยท Community Plugins: Power Tools

Extend Obsidian into a bespoke tool โ€” including the two plugins power users can't live without.

Module 7 ยท Serious Workflows

Run projects, keep your vault safe on every device, and share your notes with the world.

Module 8 ยท Mastery & Beyond

Fluency across phone and desktop, then the capstone: your own complete knowledge system.

โœ… Prerequisites

Almost none. If you can install an app and type, you're ready.

  • A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux (a phone/tablet works too โ€” see Lesson 8.1)
  • Basic comfort creating folders and files โ€” we teach the rest
  • No coding experience required. A few advanced lessons touch light scripting and Git, but each is optional and fully explained
  • No prior Markdown knowledge โ€” Lesson 2.1 teaches it from zero

What You'll Install

  • Obsidian โ€” free for personal use, from obsidian.md (we walk through it in Lesson 1.2)
  • That's the only required download. Optional extras (Git, a sync service) are introduced when needed
